One morning the father of a wealthy family transforms into a machine. And with him the whole house. This metamorphosis has acoustic consequences: Everywhere it clatters, hisses, rattles. Language dissolves into mechanical rhythms. As mechanization progresses, the question arises who is effectively operating - human or machine?
The vantage point of the audio installation is a historical research about the acoustic development of textile machines. The manufactory machines of the 18th century sigh, groan and giggle. Modern textile machines are much faster, more effective and a lot louder. This transition is reenacted during the audio installation. The Judendstil architect Henry van de Velde lived in these times of (acoustic) transition. His effusive texts about machines strongly resemble the futuristic manifest (1909). In the audio installation, they are collaged and sung by a “choir of futurists”.
